background

In 2011, almost 28,000 people lived in less than ten square kilometers. Two thirds of these are in the D-U-D area.

Any South Sea flair has been lost in the local area, one looks in vain for palm trees. Instead, there is concrete, rubbish, and depressing huts inhabited by a largely unemployed population, sluggish on the drip of American subsidies.

mobility

Precisely because the usable strip of land is narrow, there are constant traffic jams on the main road from D-U-D every day.

Taxis are cheap, and it is common to take other passengers with you. Prices outside the town are to be negotiated.

From Monday to Saturday there are buses between D-U-D (departure from Hotel Reimers) and Laura.

health

1  Majuro Hospital

Free-running, stray dogs in packs are everywhere. They get aggressive quickly. The very large cockroaches that are common here are striking. The "American way of life" has meant that diseases of civilization such as diabetes, obesity and alcoholism are common.

trips

There are almost 50 km of road around the Majuro Atoll. If you are looking for a clean beach you should move away from the two main places.

Laura

On older maps than "Majuro" the place is at the western end of the atoll. It can be reached on Lagoon Road.

The 1 Beach on the outskirts is cleaner.

Eneko Island

Eneko Island can be reached from Uliga by boat in 45 minutes. Locals also like to come here for day trips.
