Lime sintered terraces of the Cotton castle

On the mountain slopes at Pamukkale Over the millennia, thermal springs at a height of around 200 m on a rocky promontory in the Cokelez Mountains have created a wide terrace made of calcareous sinter. The limestone clots that run down the mountain like a wide petrified waterfall create a natural phenomenon that is as unusual as it is fantastic. White limestone cascades that transfigure pink at sunset, flowering oleander bushes and the mountainous landscape create an impressive interplay. The limestone terraces enclose natural "bathtubs" for the warm and healing spring water.

The Romans used the thermal springs of Pamukkale to treat rheumatism and arthritis. King Eumenes II of Pergamon had here as early as 190 BC The thermal spa Hierapolis build up; however, it was mainly planned as a fortress. But this was also accompanied by the first construction of thermal baths. Residential buildings, temples, a theater and other Hellenistic (Greek) buildings such as the Arch of Domitian were built above and inside the baths. Arriving by bus from the nearby Denizli (15-minute intervals).

The excavation site is near the village of Çivril Beycesultan to find.
