background

language

The peninsula is the Gaeltach region, which means that Gaelic is the main language here. Most of the signs are therefore only labeled in Gaelic, which makes orientation with the normal road map more difficult. Recommended are the 1: 50,000 cards 70 and 71 Discovery Series from Ordenance Survey.

Tourist Attractions

The major attractions can be found west of Dingle. There is the Slea Head Drive a circuit that covers most of the sights, both historical and scenic. The main attractions here are:

  • Kilmalkedar
  • Cloghans. Beehive huts.
  • Riasc
  • Slea Head. Christ cross and lookout point at the most south-westerly point of the peninsula, on the R559. The real attraction of the peninsula, which can be seen in its entirety from the road on Mount Eagle, is a breathtaking rocky coastline, as if cut off with a knife. You won't be alone here - in any case, the descent to the sandy beach is worthwhile in order to experience the wild waves directly between the rocks. On the narrow pass road from Slea Head to Ballynana, which one should definitely choose for the return journey, a bus can come towards you.
  • Dunbeg, Slea Head Drive, Kilvickadownig, Ventry, Co. Kerry. 8 miles west of Dingle on the coastal roads. Immediately on a cliff is a Celtic round building with walls up to six meters wide and three meters high, in the middle you can see the remains of a house that was oval on the outside and square on the inside. The view of the rough rocky coast with the wild waves is fantastic. There is a delicious coffee in the street with the parking lot Stonehouse Restaurant, an impressive stone house with a stone roof.
  • Gallarus Oratory, Dingle Penninsula, Dingle, Co. Kerry, V92 Y028. Eight kilometers northwest of Dingle, the interior of one of the oldest early Christian oratorios, a 1200-year-old stone chapel, is a good 14 square meters. The stones of the boat-shaped, cantilevered vaulted building, built using drywall technology, are layered so closely that the interior is completely dry.
  • Blasket Center. History museum of the formerly inhabited Blasket Islands. Headphones in German are available for the audiovisual demonstration.Open: from April to October daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.Price: Entry € 4, children and students € 2.
  • Brandon Harbor. It is from here that Saint Brandon set off for America.
  • Baile na bhFionnúrach. Ringfort at the foot of Mt.Brandon, difficult to find as not signposted. Search on Google Maps for Ballynavenooragh, County Kerry, Ireland and then place on satellite image).
Inch Beach in Dingle Bay, Atlantic

Other sights are:

  • Connor Pass and its pass road
  • Healey Pass (This is located on the Beara peninsula and is definitely worth a trip, even if it is even further south than the Ring of Kerry (neighboring peninsula).)
  • Caherconree Promontory Fort, above Healey Pass.
  • Inch Beach. 20 kilometers west of Castlemaine on R561, large spit in Dingle Bay, which narrows this Atlantic bay with the opposite spit, Rossbeigh. An approximately 5 km long sandy beach with a dune goes as a peninsula from the peninsula into the sea and invites you to take a long walk. Immediately after the Inch Peninsula, the road climbs and offers us another great view of the bay.
