Dmanissi is a daba (urban-type settlement) in the Georgian region Kwemo Kartli and the administrative seat of the district of the same name (Munizipaliteti). While the city itself has little to offer in terms of tourism, the excavation and ruin site about 15 km to the east is particularly important Dmanisis Nakalakari famous for the extensive remains of an early medieval fortress town as well as the finds of hominin fossils from 1991.

Dmanissi is located in front of the Javakheti mountain range on a plateau at 1171 m, about 85 km southwest of Tbilisi. The entire area is dominated by agriculture. Even the district capital has practically no industry since the end of the Soviet Union. About two thirds of the district's population are ethnic Azeri.

getting there

With public transport Dmanissi can be reached by minibuses (marshrutkas). These start i.a. from Tbilisi-Ortatschala), Marneuli, Bolnissi and drive at least every hour. If you are traveling with minibuses on the main road ს 6 from / to Armenia, you can get off at the intersection ს 6 / შ 68 near the village of Didi Dmanissi and from there "catch" another marshrutka or stop your car.

By car The journey takes place on the trunk road ს 6 / E117, which leads from Marneuli to the Armenian border at Guguti and as M3 on to Vanadzor. At the village of Didi Dmanissi you change to the well-developed regional road შ 68 and after approx. 15 km you reach the city. The შ 68 continues from Dmanissi to Bediani, where it meets the შ 33 Zalka-Tetrizkaro. However, the northern section of the შ 68 is in very poor condition and an off-road vehicle is essential.

In the village itself there is a nice park, the usual administrative buildings in Soviet or post-Soviet architectural styles, as well as some churches. In particular, the St. George's Church (წმინდა გიორგის ეკლესია) standing on a hill southwest of the village should be mentioned here.

When tourists or tour operators speak of "Dmanissi", they always mean the archaeological site about 15 km east of the city of Dmanissi. Near the Didi Dmanisi locality you can visit the medieval ruined city, the Sioni Cathedral and the archaeological site of humanoid fossils. Their discoveries from 1991 onwards have revolutionized anthropology. They are considered to be a possible link between the earliest representatives of the genus Homo from Africa and the later fossils of Homo erectus known from Asia and prove that members of the genus Homo penetrated Eurasia 300,000 years earlier than previously assumed.
