Understand
History
Dushanbe is less than a hundred years old. The city was built according to plan from 1924 on the place where the Red Army had destroyed a village. The village was called Dushanbe-bozor, which means Monday market in Persian. Later this name was shortened to Dushanbe ("Monday"), spelled Dushanbe in English. The city was developed as the capital of Tajikistan, which from October 1924 was an autonomous republic within the Soviet Socialist Republic of Uzbekistan. On October 15, 1929, the Soviet Republic of Tajikistan was formed, the republic which became an independent country on September 9, 1991. From 1929 to 1961, the city was called Stalinabad.
After 1924 the population grew considerably. In 1925 there were still 6000 inhabitants, in 1939 there were 83,000 and at the fall of the Soviet Union about 300,000 people lived in the city. At the time of the Soviet Union, a large part of the population of Dushanbe consisted of Russians. Since Tajikistan's independence and the ensuing civil war, most Russians have left and there has been an influx of Tajiks from other parts of the country.
