To move inside Dubai, there are 2 metro lines but also many bus lines.
Uber is also available in Dubai and there are many taxis operating in the city.
The city is quite large (more than 20 kilometers north / south) and having a car can be useful to avoid excessive taxi costs.

For more conventional shopping, you can go to one of the Dubai malls. The biggest are the Dubai Mall and the Mall of the Emirates. There are many more in the city.
If you want to buy Middle Eastern goods, it is better to go to Old Dubai in Bur Dubai or Deira. You will find souks with many products from the region: kohl, henna, spices, soaps, artisanal products from the Middle East, pastries, ...
In this same district, there is the Gold Souq for purchases of gold jewelry.

Around Dubai, the most visited place is the desert. It is about a half hour drive from Dubai. Possibility of 4x4, a camel ride but also to spend a night there.
