Dunedin - city in New Zealandon the east coast South Islands, on Otago Bay.

Characteristic

The city was founded by Scots, hence its name comes from 'Dùn Èideann', which in Scottish Gaelic meant Edinburgh.

The city flourished at the end of the 19th century during the gold rush in the area. Most of the town's buildings come from that period.

The city center is flat and the suburbs are on the hills. Residents claim to have the steepest street in the world (Baldwin road). This fact is celebrated every year during the chocolate festival, when thousands of Jaffa cookies (the Polish equivalent are Delicje) are dropped from this very street in the annual race of these cookies down the road.

It is not without reason that Dunedin is called an academic city, during the academic year the student population constitutes 23% of the total population, all thanks to the University of Otago, one of the most famous universities on the islands. The university is the second largest employer in the South Island and the largest employer in the city of Dunedin.
