The small town Doemitz lies in an area rich in meadows, often exposed to flooding, at the confluence of the Neue Elde with the Elbe in the southwest Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Dömitz became a town around 1225 and belonged to the beginning of the 14th century. to the county of Dannenberg, then came to Saxony-Wittenberg, later to Brandenburg, in 1423 by marriage to Mecklenburg and was fortified in 1560. During the Thirty Years War Dömitz was repeatedly captured and destroyed by both parties. On November 1, 1635, a battle took place here, by which Banér horrified the fortress besieged by the Saxons. The Prussian Major Schill stormed Dömitz on May 15, 1809.
