Characteristic

Geographical location: 49 ° 28′00 ″ N 20 ° 12′30 ″ E

In the years 1975–1998, the town administratively belonged to the then Tarnobrzeg Province.

Along with Harklowa and Frydman, it is a very valuable reserve of folk culture - folk costumes with Spiš influences and Podhale dialect.

However, it is best known for the church-museum under the invocation of st. Michael the Archangel from the end of the 15th century, larch wood, built without nails, which has survived unchanged to this day. The first church in Dębno was probably erected in the 13th century. The present church was built in the second half of the 15th century on the site of an older temple.

Worth seeing

It is an oriented temple (i.e. an altar from the east, an entrance porch from the west) with a carcass construction. It is one of the best-preserved gothic wooden churches and at the same time one of the most famous Polish monuments in the country and abroad (it was nominated as the only wooden church in the 7 Wonders of Poland competition), it is distinguished by a silhouette blended into the landscape, practically unchanged since its construction.

The tower with sloping walls, strongly tapering upwards, was erected in 1601 in a column-and-frame structure with an aperture. Today it is one of the oldest structures of this type in Poland, it is believed that only the tower of the church in Binarowa is older. The roofs of the church, the tower's roofs and walls, as well as its cupola are covered with shingles, while the walls of the tower's cupola are covered with boards with decorative lace at the bottom.

The interior is decorated with original polychrome from around 1500 made on wood, the only polychrome from that time in the world so well preserved to this day. Among 77 motifs is the Jagiellonian eagle. The crucifix on the rood beam separating the presbytery from the nave comes from 1380. In the main altar, a valuable triptych made at the beginning of the 16th century and a wooden tabernacle in the 14th century. The side altar of "Five Holy Ladies" with valuable sculptures also comes from In the 14th century, a statue of St. Nicholas from around 1420.

The trees surrounding the church come from the 15th century and have been monuments of nature since 1919.

When designing the dam on the Dunajec, special measures were planned (including embankments) to protect against flooding.

Together with several other wooden churches of southern Lesser Poland and Subcarpathia - Binarowa, Blizne, Haczów, Lipnica Murowana, Sękowa, it was entered into UNESCO World Heritage List in Poland.
