East Brooklyn is one of the districts of Brooklyn comprising the neighborhoods of Cypress Hills, East New York, Canarsie, Bergen Beach, Flatlands, Mill Basin, Marine Park, Gerritsen Beach and Barren Island.
Understand
- Cypress Hills is a small neighborhood with a diverse population separated from the rest of the district by Atlantic Avenue.
- East New York is, like many neighborhoods in Brooklyn, with a colorful history from the days of settler farmers to parks such as Highland Park, which are always a favorite of children. In terms of shopping, residents have been given the Gateway Mall revitalizing the environment somewhat. However, like Brownsville, East New York is actually one of the most dangerous areas in all of New York. So be careful going to JFK on lines A and J and bus B15.
- Canarsia is a West Indian district which will give you the impression of a small provincial town, with its small individual houses. Major shopping streets are Rockaway Parkway and some segments of Seaview Avenue.
- Mill Basin and Bergen beach are typically residential neighborhoods, with a predominantly Italian, Russian and / or Jewish population.
To go
By Metro
This area is a little less well served than the rest of Brooklyn. No station in the Flatlands area (nearest stations: Flatbush Avenue-Brooklyn College on the lines and (rush hour only) almost an hour's walk (so for once, we recommend the buses, see those on Flatbush Avenue and Avenue H)!
Canarsie is a little better off, since the line is terminus at Rockway Parkway (at 25 min walk from Jamaica Bay, or by bus B42 connecting Canarsie Piers to this station). It will be quite difficult to access anywhere in Brooklyn, but the lines have connections with it.
Ironically, East New York, the most dangerous neighborhood, is also the best served. Line 3 has its terminus on New Lots Avenue, the closest station to the Bay (it's still a hike!). The lines and also have several stops in East New York. If you are heading directly to Brooklyn from JFK, you will pass that way, however note that the trains are safe.
In LIRR
The Long Island Railroad network (Atlantic Branch) has only one stop in this district, always at East New York. Trains passing by go to or come fromAtlantic Terminal.
By bus
Express bus BM1, BM2, BM4 and BM5, from Manhattan.
By car
For once, it will be recommended to travel by car in this part of New York, because of the scarcity of public transport and the dangerousness of some neighborhoods. Peripherals Belt Parkway and Shore Parkway pass near the tourist spots towards Jamaica Bay.
