background
This is a small fishing village in the curve of the south coast up to the east coast. It was founded by Isaac Bodden at the end of the 17th century. The road was only finished here in 1935. Until then, you could only be reached by sea. For this reason there was already a beacon in 1906. First, an old ship's mast was used. Every evening a lantern was lit there at a height of 18 m. In 1918 a fixed tower was built 800 m away, which was used until 1937. The current tower is being preserved by the National Trust and powered by solar power. The Heritage Beach is also owned by the National Trust.
The tiny settlement of Gun Bay is a good one kilometer northeast of the East End. Founded around 1800, it was one of the two ports of entry for the Cayman Islands. The population lived exclusively from trading with the passing ships and from drawing up birth, marriage and death certificates.
The hotels are spread along the entire, slightly curved east coast, almost to the north side. The island is a good 6 km wide here.
A reef runs along the entire east coast, up to 1.5 km from the shore. Colliers Bay in the north is less of a beach than a popular surfing area.
