El Poblado is one of the 16 municipalities that make up the urban area of Medellín.
To know
After the refoundation of Medellín in 1675 in what is now the Berrío Park, El Poblado became the center of a vast rural area dotted with farms that provided the production of food necessary for the sustenance of the colony. Over time the farms became parceled out and the area became a holiday center.
It was only in the second half of the twentieth century that El Poblado ceased to be a rural area and second homes. Its landscape changed abruptly becoming highly urbanized. Numerous factories sprang up along the riverside and in the following decade El Poblado had already transformed itself into an upper-class neighborhood. Numerous nightclubs arose there, all concentrated in what is still known today as the Zona Rosa and also large hotels on the Golden Mile, still among the most popular in Medellín.
