The town Elvas is a Roman foundation. In 714 it fell to the Moors, it was recaptured in 1166, was abandoned again and finally came into Portuguese possession in 1229. Then it was strongly fortified with several bastions, most of the facilities are still in very good structural condition. After an aqueduct took over the city's water supply in 1622, it was the most important Portuguese fortification for a long time Tagus river. Today Elvas is the administrative seat of the district of the same name.
