Safety

Visitors should be less concerned about crime than about strict law enforcement. There are penalties for homosexuality. Sex outside of marriage is also illegal. Even women who report rape have been arrested for adultery or sex outside of marriage. Caution is definitely recommended.

Another things you should be aware of is the drug laws in UAE. Some common painkillers in Western countries are illegal narcotics in the UAE like codeine. Don't bring any with you unless you have a copy of your prescription or you can join others who have received prison sentences. In contrast, antibiotics are available free of charge over the counter at pharmacies. If you receive a prescription for prescription drugs in the UAE, such as some pain relievers and antidepressants, be sure to keep a copy of the prescription when traveling abroad.
