Ernolsheim-sur-Bruche is a French commune located in the Bas-Rhin department in Alsace. It has more than 1,700 inhabitants and is about 20 km from Strasbourg and 8 km from the nearest airport. Its coat of arms represents a boatman's oar, a memory of the old floating on the Bruche canal.
A little history
The town is a former possession of the bishopric of Strasbourg and a number of religious institutions own property there. The village will be destroyed by the Strasbourg residents in 1262, then in 1280, it is sold to the bishop of Strasbourg: Henri IV by Count Henri de Veldenz. From the 15th century, the village becomes the fief-pledge of the Lords of Pfettisheim, until the extinction of their line in 1516. In 1603, the Lorraine and Brandenburgers will fight near the locality which is located on the southern edge of the Ackerland plateau which dominates the Bruche depression. The village will reach its maximum population in the 19th century. This will decrease and then increase again during the urbanization of the countryside. The Canal de la Bruche was built in 1681 during the reign of Louis XIV. It was originally designed to be a military channel. Now it is the delight of walkers who follow its course thanks to the cycle path.

An inscription on a cartouche of the eastern gable wall gives the date of construction of the building: 1554. After which it will be converted into a farm. The circular staircase turret serving the north facade is half hidden by a lower wing, also flanked by turrets at both ends. Although more recent in appearance, the wing parallel to the street has window frames. Renaissance, in stone on the ground floor and in wood on the upper levels. It is a private domain which cannot be visited.
The "Vauban Canal"
On the old towpath of the Bruche canal, a cycle path is set up starting from Strasbourg, and leading to Molsheim or Marlenheim. It was built in 1681 by Vauban in order to transport the materials necessary for the construction of the citadel of Strasbourg. About twenty kilometers long, the Bruche canal is made up of 11 locks and leaves from the hamlet of Wolxheim-le-Canal to arrive in Strasbourg.
Church of Saints-Cosme-et-Damien
This building dating from 1838-1839 was built on the site of a church or a chapel dedicated to Saint Cosme and Saint Damien. Originally the parish church, placed since 1711 under the patronage of the Virgin, depends on the domanial court of the Bishop of Strasbourg, called Oberhof. In 1498, the employer's rights and the tithe were due to the provost of Haslach. From 1694, the parish became a branch of that of Kolbsheim, which held a presbytery. Until 1802, Ernolsheim was part of the rural chapter of Molsheim.
The Town Hall-School
Located in the heart of the village, the communal house is built according to an L plan. Sober and functional, this municipal building surprises with its brick facing. It also hosted the only boys' school class until 1978.
