THE'Is of Krakow consists of several districts, the best known of which is Nowa Huta. It is located east of the old town and north of the Vistula. Nowa Huta has recently become one of the tourist destinations of Krakow as an example a post-communist district with very typical socialist realism architecture.

Understand

Story

Traces of occupation dating back two or three thousand years have been found. Pottery was produced there as well as bronze and iron objects. The area occupied by Nowa Huta was in the Middle Ages a fertile rural area. At VIe century, the Vistulas, one of the Polish tribes, erected a tumulus and a monastery was erected in XIIe century.

In 1946, Bolesław Bierut, then President of the Republic of Poland, later first secretary of the Polish United Workers' Party, was "offered" by Stalin the construction of a large metallurgical factory located near Krakow. Krakow was then the intellectual and academic center of Poland, and considered by Stalin as a conservative hotbed of resistance to communist ideas.

Construction work began in 1949.

Nowa Huta was originally intended to be an autonomous socialist model city, but in 1951 it was finally incorporated into Krakow, and became a new part of the city. All parts of it were built at the same time between the 1950s and 1960s: living quarters, town center, central square. The Lenin foundry was inaugurated on July 22, 1954. Renamed in 1990, it is now called the Tadeusz Sendzimir foundry and belongs to the Arcelor Mittal group.

For more than twenty years, Karol Wojtyła, the future Pope John Paul II, will defend the Catholics of this city, a model communist city, deprived of a place of worship. It supports the construction of a church by celebrating Christmas masses in the open air to promote the creation of a dignified place of worship for the workers. Paul VI even offered him a stone from the old St. Peter's Basilica.

The film The Marble Man by Andrzej Wajda shows the life of masons during the construction of Nowa Huta in the 1950s as well as the use of propaganda during the period of Stalinism.

Town planning

The original complex of apartment buildings is built around axes that radiate from the central square ((pl)Plac Centralny). The architecture of the blocks of the first apartments mixes the Renaissance style with Soviet realism. The buildings constructed from 1956 are Modernist (from this period an interesting example is the block called Swedish block at the address bone. Szklane Domy, 19c), while those built in the 1970s and 1980s are mainly plattenbau, a technique that uses prefabricated concrete slabs, a technique very often used in the Eastern Bloc. The first buildings in Poland which were constructed using a technique using large blocks and which later evolved into a technique plattenbau, can be seen at bone. Stalowe.
