background

The administrative seat of the Trelawny district was founded around 1775 and named after the then island governor Sir William Trelawny. The place is one of the best preserved places with Georgian architectural style in the entire Caribbean. According to the standard Renaissance style, 6 x 6 streets were laid out in a checkerboard pattern. Between 1790 and 1830 it was mainly sugar that was shipped. With the end of slavery, the place slowly fell into disrepair. In terms of design, the cityscape has hardly changed in the last 200 years. Unfortunately, the buildings have not been maintained since the last hurricane and are increasingly falling into disrepair. The port was protected from 1811 by Fort Balcarres at Palmetto Point. The historic city center of Falmouth around Water Square is repeatedly used as a film set. Instead of the fountain, there used to be a round, open water tank. Scenes from the films Papillon and James Bond - Live and Let Die were filmed here.

The Anglican Church was built in 1795-96. Two of the oldest buildings are on Market Street. The Baptist meeting house dates from 1798. 1 Market Street was built in 1799 as a town house by Edward Barrett, owner of Cinnamon Hill and Greenwood Estates. It has wrought iron balconies, friezes and door frames in the “Adam style”.

The courthouse from 1815 was poorly restored after a fire in 1912, but it is one of the most important Georgian buildings on the island, with the protruding gable supported by four Doric columns.

The "Dome" from 1801 was originally a Phoenix iron foundry, was last used as a mini-museum, since the hurricane Gilbert in 1988 it has been closed due to severe damage.

At the eastern end of the village you cross the Martha Brea River. A few hundred meters further is the large bay Luminous Lagoon or Glistening Waters, followed by the small town of Rock.

In 2005 the construction of a 1,500 room hotel began. For the cricket world championships 2007 a stadium with 11,000 seats was built that can also be used for other sports. It is 2 miles east of Falmouth on Daniel Town Main Road. From the expressway, all you can see for a moment is the blue roof shimmering through the trees. The Jamaicans living nearby call this facility today: the most expensive goat pen in Jamaica - there is hardly any reuse!

By upgrading the coastal road to an expressway, traffic will be diverted around the town. For the lost purchasing power, the government has expanded the port for cruise ships. In 2009/2010 a more than 700 m long quay and a shopping arcade were built for the two new cruise ships "Oasis of the Sea" and "Allure" of the Royal Caribbean Line. The Oasis of the Sea can carry 6,000 (!) Passengers. The town center has been significantly rebuilt for cruise guests and traffic is being rerouted. The center is now a pedestrian zone!

getting there

In the street

The national road A 1 used to lead directly through the narrow streets of the town. Since the expansion of the coastal road, Falmouth has been excluded from through traffic since 2007. Because of the cruise terminal, many streets have become one-way streets (but there are no signs). It is 37 km from Montego Bay. In an easterly direction it is 68 km to Ocho Rios.

Tourist Attractions

On the main road from Montego Bay to Falmouth, just before the entrance to Falmouth, there was a crocodile farm for decades. One of the "James Bond films" was shot there. The facility was closed in the 1990s. Since 2011, the business has been open to tourists again and is a major attraction. In addition to a larger free-flight facility for native birds, you will also find wild pigs, raccoons, small game animals from the mountains and a huge number of alligators. Young animals up to the age of three are also reared in three breeding tanks.
