The Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (international: Amsterdam Airport Schiphol) is the international airport of the city of Amsterdam and the largest in the Netherlands. It is southwest of Amsterdam on the territory of the municipality Haarlemmermeer.

Schiphol is one of the largest airports in Europe and an international hub. The options for arriving and departing by public transport and also with your own motor vehicle are correspondingly well developed - but it can get correspondingly full at peak times. Train rides to Schiphol

From Frankfurt / Main, Cologne and Düsseldorf there are several ICE connections to Amsterdam every day. There are also connections from the north and south, from Berlin or with the Thalys from Brussels or Paris. Average travel times are: Berlin 6.35 hours, Düsseldorf 2½ hours, Bonn 4.15 hours, Hamburg 5.15 hours, Frankfurt / Main 4 hours and Munich 11 hours. With the Thalys from Bruxelles-Midi 1½ hours and Paris-Nord 3 hours. From Cologne and Aachen, the journey with the Thalys with a change in Brussels can be faster than the ICE, but no single tickets can be bought - in this case a separate ticket to Brussels and from Brussels to Schiphol has to be bought, which can be expensive is. From the communities around Aachen close to the border, it is also conceivable to travel by IC (mostly without changing trains) from the Maastricht, Heerlen or Sittard train stations. Many places in the Netherlands are served by the Sprinter train. Train rides from Schiphol

The train to Amsterdam runs every 10 minutes and takes around 20 minutes to get to the Central Station.

Tickets for the trains can be bought at counters (more expensive) or machines in the building, the first train information and machines can be found at the baggage carousel after landing. Important: You cannot buy or redeem tickets on the train in the Netherlands.

By bus

The Schipol Sternet The system serves the nearby cities in the vicinity from early in the morning to late in the evening, some lines also have night buses. Most routes are served every half hour or faster. The buses stop in front of Schiphol Plaza.

The "Zuidtangent express bus" only drives to a few stops, offers more comfort and often uses a special bus lane (or even bus route) so that you can travel faster even in rush hour. Stretch:

  • Line 300: Haarlem, Vijfhuizen, Hoofddorp, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, Amstelveen, Ouderkerk, Amsterdam Zuidoost and back (6 times an hour during the day, every hour at night)
  • Line 310: Nieuw Vennep, Hoofddorp, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, Amsterdam Buitenveldert and back (at least twice an hour, to Nieuw Vennep 4x an hour)

FlixBus connects Schiphol cheaply and quickly with various cities in Germany (e.g. Bremen, Berlin, Frankfurt / Main, Munich). The buses start at platform C of the large bus station directly in front of Schiphol Plaza (= arrival area). There is no sign on the platform that draws attention to Flixbus; you have to look out for the distinctive green buses. Very few FlixBuses depart directly from Schiphol, most of them start from a stop at the train station Amsterdam Sloterdijk in Amsterdam / West. From the airport terminal, this train station is easy and quick with the one already mentioned above sprinter-Train to reach the airport train station several times an hour. A single journey costs € 3.70 for an adult (as of March 2019), tickets can be purchased at the machine or online in advance (e-ticket). They are also available at the counter, but they are a bit more expensive there. The destination station for the sprinters who stop in Amsterdam Sloterdijk is Amsterdam Centraal. The journey takes only 10 minutes. After arriving in Amsterdam Sloterdijk, follow the signs to Piarcoplein. This is the name of the street where the buses stop. The stop is on the north side of the train station, between the two elevated railway lines, on the front edge of the large parking lot. Again, you don't look for a sign here, but for the green bus. FlixBus tickets can be canceled and changed, sometimes subject to a fee, but you will never get your money back, only a voucher, which will also expire after one year.

With the taxi

One can go to the airport Travel taxi can be booked as "private" (sole use) or "shared" (together with others). With the latter, the large-capacity taxi drives from the individual destinations one after the other and you save money.

With the hotel shuttle

Many hotels offer a free shuttle bus as a service for hotel guests. The frequency and first / last journey differs from hotel to hotel. There are also hotels where the service costs a few euros (which is still cheaper than a taxi). Just ask when booking the hotel or on the Info page of the airport.

In the street

The highway A4 (Amsterdam – The Hague) has an exit to the airport. From there you drive in a loop along the parking garages / spaces and in front of the plaza.

The A4 has important connection nodes in the north:

  • Badhoevedorp A4 /A9 to Amstelveen and later to the A2 Direction Utrecht
  • Raasdorp A5 / A9 to the port of Amsterdam, IJmuiden and further north

The A5 is a kind of bypass motorway west of the airport, it branches off from the A4 at Hoofddorp.

By bicycle

Arrival and departure

The central area is Schiphol Plaza, this is where the buses, shuttles and taxis arrive, and the trains stop here in the basement. Change / transit

In transit, luggage is usually not picked up, but instead passed straight through to the next plane. The passengers walk in the building to their connecting flight, information about this is available at information stations. Those who do not have a boarding pass can do so at one of the transfer counters, which are located in the gates (not in the plaza!). As one of the first airports in the world, you can also print out your boarding pass yourself at the blue "Self-Service transfer" stations.

The recommendation is to be at the airport 2 hours before boarding time for domestic European flights in order to have enough time for check-in, security control and walking to the boarding gate. The check-in counters are located in departure halls 1 (rows 1–8), 2 (rows 9–16) and 3 (rows 17–32). There are also more than 100 self-service stations (kiosks) where you can print your boarding pass yourself. The stations are all yellow and you can choose between different airlines.

Short-term parking

People collecting their cars can park for 15 minutes free of charge at the “Short-Stop Parking” P6 opposite the arrival hall (Schiphol Plaza), after which every 13 minutes or part thereof costs € 2. If you want to find someone to pick you up, you have to get out of the arrivals hall and cross the zebra crossing to the other side of the street.

Parking garages P1 and P2 are also intended for short-term parking, the terminal building can be reached on foot. The parking fee is € 1 per 13 minutes or € 30 per day. In the parking garages there is a special "Privium" area close to the building, monitored and more expensive.

Long-term parking

If you want to park for more than a few days, you can park in monitored garages at many of the surrounding hotels. These hotels often offer a 24-hour shuttle service to and from the airport, the journey time usually being between 10 and 20 minutes. The prices vary between 25–50 € / week.

Schiphol Parking

The tariff is for parking longer than 3 days Schiphol Smart Parking (from 2014) in the parking lot "P3 long" cheap. A reservation is necessary here. 8 days always cost 49 €.

Connection between terminals

All gates are located at the single terminal building, there are no connecting buses or the like. The building is very spacious, it takes 30 minutes to walk from the main entrance to the most distant gate.

The shopping arcade after passport control offers a wide range of shops in the areas of: jewelry, watches, leather, travel accessories, perfume and cosmetics, photo and electronics, clothing and fashion, chocolate, flowers and books.

In the area of ​​the terminal that is accessible to passengers on Schengen flights (departure areas B / C, in front of passport control), however, the shopping opportunities are limited - besides a few restaurants, newsagents, souvenir shops and TravelValue stores, you won't find much here much. Passengers traveling within Europe should, if a larger selection is desired, use the offers in the "Plaza" in the arrivals area above the airport train station before checking in their luggage and hand in the purchased goods together with their luggage.

At Schiphol Airport, you will find a large number of international restaurants and fast food options (including a McDonald's), especially in the non-Schengen area (behind passport control) of the terminal. The selection in the Schengen area is much smaller (e.g. "Pavilion" directly behind the security check or the "Sports Bar" in departure area B). Those who enjoy typical Dutch snacks from the vending machine should try their luck at "Vlaamse Frites" in arrivals area B (plaza / next to the jacked-up aircraft cockpit), even though the prices for such "delicacies" are well above the city-center level.

Several hotels (e.g. Sheraton, Hilton and a branch of the typical prefabricated hotels "CitizenM") are connected directly from the plaza to the terminal via a covered corridor. These, as well as the hotel NH Schiphol Airport belonging to the airport, are about 10 minutes away from the terminal by a connected shuttle service. In the terminal itself (international area) there is a Yotel accommodation, the "room" design of which is reminiscent of Japanese capsule hotels.

Practical advice

Internet: The provider KPN has equipped the airport with internet and WiFi. To quickly check emails, you can use the WiFi twice per device for 30 minutes each (if you bring a smartphone and tablet with you, you can use free internet for 2 hours on each of the two devices, i.e. 2 hours in total). Otherwise the Internet costs # euros per minute. Those who book longer times get a little cheaper. Access codes can be bought at some shops. The 3-euro online times can also be booked by SMS. Payment is also possible by credit card. There are some online / stations with stationary computers. These also have sockets for using your own computer.
