background

getting there

With the metro

There are stations in the airport area Airport Terminal 1, Airport Terminal 3 and Emirates the red line. Going to the metro with large luggage is not a particularly good idea, as the metros into town are often hopelessly overcrowded.

Terminal 2 cannot be reached by metro. There is the option of taking the bus or, more simply, a taxi.

By bus

With the taxi

There is a taxi stand at the exit, you will be directed to the next free taxi in a friendly manner. A ride to the hotels in Deira costs around AED 40 depending on the location. It is advisable to exchange money in good time.

At the taxi stand, the drivers of the black limousines are quite aggressive and try to lure the travelers away from the normal taxis and towards their vehicles. A black limousine and a driver in a suit look better, and you have more space in the vehicle. However, this service costs about 1.5 times the normal taxi ride. You should also make sure that a taxi has a taximeter and that the driver switches it on, otherwise you will pay fancy prices. In the case of vehicles without a taximeter, always talk about the price before driving, as the first-mentioned price is usually too high.

Terminals

Map of Dubai airport

Dubai Airport consists of three terminals on the landside: Dem 1 Terminal 1 (southwest of the airport), where the check-in desks of all airlines that do not belong to Emirates and Qantas are located, or from 2 Terminal 2 depart from. Terminal 2 is located on the opposite (north-eastern) side of the airport and handles almost exclusively cheap flights. Terminal building 3 (also located on the southwest side of the airport) only contains the check-in counters of the local airline Emirates. It is noteworthy that Terminal Buildings 1 and 3 are almost completely below the runway.

Terminal 3 departure hall

Airside is structured 3 Terminal 3 in the Concourses A, B and C, which are interconnected. There is a pedestrian underpass between Concourse C and B. Concourse A is connected to Concourse B by an underground train. All three concourses consist of elongated, narrow buildings to which aircraft can dock on both sides via finger gates. In addition, there are a large number of bus gates that are used for handling flights at apron positions. Due to its large size (at the time of its opening, Concourse B was the largest building in the world in terms of its footprint), you should plan enough time to reach the gate. The estimated travel times to the individual terminal areas are shown everywhere on corresponding signs.

Since the opening of Concourse D at the beginning of 2016, Terminal 1 has been exclusively assigned to this departure area. All flights that are not operated by Emirates or Qantas are handled here. As Concourse D is not located directly at Terminal 1, it is connected to the terminal area by a train within the security area.

Arrival and departure

Change

The change in Dubai between Concourses A, B and C is basically easy due to the airside connection, but due to the long distances it can be a challenge, especially for passengers with restricted mobility. It is advisable to plan enough time for the transfer between the individual gates; if you have to cross the airport completely, this can take up to three quarters of an hour, depending on the rush (which is greatest at night between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m.).

Check in

Check-in for flights operated by Emirates or Qantas takes place in Terminal 3. A distinction is made between bookings in economy class (check-in in the main hall, at the counter or at the machine) and those in a premium class (business / first class, check-in in the smaller hall to the right of the main hall).

Connection between terminals

Concourses B and C are directly connected to each other at their ends, so that you can switch back and forth between these areas on foot. Concourses A and B are connected by an underground train, the journey time is approx. 5 minutes (the stations are located in the basement in the middle of the respective concourse). Shuttle buses also run from the ends of Concourse A across the apron to Concourse C.

There is a 24-hour shuttle service between Terminals 1 and 3, just follow the signs. The best way to get to Termial 2 is by taxi. There is no shuttle (as of 9/2019).
