Istanbul Airport - Flughafen Istanbul

Istanbul Airport

The Istanbul Airport opened in October 2018. He lies in a circle Arnavutkoy northwest of the Istanbuler Downtown. In April 2019, operations were relocated from Istanbul Ataturk Airport, making it the largest airport in Turkey.

background

getting there

By train

Two new metro lines and the metro station are scheduled to open in April 2020. One metro line will follow in the future Halkalı, the other after Gayrettepe. Buses are currently being used to bridge the gap.

In addition to the metro station, the express train station is due to open in 2021. The express trains will then cross the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge to Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen Airport and further after Ankara drive.

By bus

The bus station is on floor -2

The airport buses from Havaist drive 20 bus routes and 150 long-distance buses to downtown Istanbul and stop in the central districts. You have to reckon with a travel time of about 1.5 hours, but you should include an additional buffer in the rush hour.

Bus tickets

I recommend the Istanbul card. It costs 6 TL and can be recharged over and over again. It is accepted on all public transport in Istanbul. Several people can ride it at the same time and children up to and including 5 years of age ride it for free.

There is also the 5 Pass Card (BeşGeç, 17 TL) or the 10 Pass Card (OnGeç, 32 TL).

The cards can be bought or topped up at the HAVAİST ticket counters. There are also the Istanbul card and the 5 Pass Card at the yellow machines and the Istanbul Card and 10 Pass Card at the blue machines.

With the taxi

A taxi to Istanbul city center costs around TL 200 (31 euros) and takes 45 to 60 minutes. Free taxis are available in front of the arrival hall, and you can find taxis that have been ordered in advance on floor -2.

There are cheap yellow economy taxis (type C), blue comfort taxis (type D) and black premium VIP taxis (type E) on offer. You can book the taxis in advance via.

In the street

The new O-6 motorway, leads over the Third Bosphorus Bridge, Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge, Yavuz Sultan Selim Köprüsü and connects those of Edirne coming motorway O-3 / E 80 with the after Ankara walking highway O-4 / E 80 with each other.

The other new highway O-7 leads directly to Istanbul's old Ataturk Airport.

Park

There are around 18,000 parking spaces in five parking garages. 4 parking garages have 7 floors, Yellow Car Park only has 3 floors. The parking spaces are within walking distance of the terminal and are guarded around the clock. Refueling, maintenance, repair and cleaning are offered for a fee.

Istanbul airport map

There is a very large terminal, a second smaller terminal is to be opened in 2025. Areas A to F in the terminal are for international flights and G is reserved for domestic flights.

Arrivals - Gelen yolcu katı

Departure - Giden yolcu katı

There are 7 entrances to the departure lounge. Entrances 1 and 2 are for domestic flights (İç Hatlar), Entrances 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 for international flights (Dış Hatlar).

The check-in counters for Turkish Airlines are at 3, 4 or 5, those for other international airlines at 6 and 7.

mobility

Since there is currently only one terminal without a train or bus transfer system, you will probably have to walk everywhere. It can take a while to get from one end of the huge terminal to the opposite end, or to get to its gate at the long piers. You have to plan enough time to walk around the airport.

Post and Telecommunications

There is an airport wifi that theoretically gives you one hour of free network access if you log in with your mobile phone number. Unfortunately, the confirmation SMS does not always arrive. The shops and restaurants do not offer their own WiFi either. Reliable network access without roaming or local SIM cards is only available in the lounges and the airport hotel.
