Fourni is an archipelago of North Aegean Islands in Greece.

background

The archipelago lies in the eastern Aegean Sea south between Samos and Ikaria. In fact, Fournoi is not just an island, but a formation of over 20 small barren islands, only two of which are inhabited: Fournoi and Thymaina. The centrally located 30 km² main island consists of two almost equal parts, each about 9 km in length. Due to the highly indented coastline with numerous small bays, the width varies from less than 300 m to a maximum of 3.5 km. The main islands have a hilly to mountainous character. The coastline is strongly indented, steep coasts interspersed with grottos alternate with rocky coasts and deep bays with sandy and pebble beaches. In the Middle Ages, Fournoi was an ideal base for pirates. Because of the hundreds of small fjords and hidden beaches where their ships could be hidden, they were sought after by corsairs; H. Piraten, once called "Corseoi Islands".

With the emerging tourism on the neighboring island Ikaria Fourni also benefits from day trippers. Few of them spend more than a few days of vacation on the island as it is too remote and quiet for most. For sailors, however, the many secluded bays are a paradise.

getting there

By plane

The island does not have an airport. The closest airports are in Ikaria and Samos.

By boat

Fourni can only be reached by ferry. There are three connections a week to Piraeus via the Cycladic islands of Mykonos, Paros and Syros. Otherwise Fourni can be reached via Samos or Ikaria. Flying Dolphins also operate from Samos (Pythagorio), Ikaria (Agios Kirykos), Patmos and Lipsi in summer. There are several daily connections between the main island and Thymena.

mobility

  • If you want to explore the beautiful beaches and bays, you need an off-road vehicle or quad, as they can almost only be reached via dirt roads. There is a landlord in the main town. Most day-trippers stay in town and don't need a vehicle. Alternatively, trips to the beaches in small fishing boats are offered, which are highly recommended.
  • A ferry goes from the harbor to the even more lonely neighboring island Thimena.
