history

The history of the monastery begins in 1406, when a simple wooden chapel was built on the mountain, which was consecrated to St. Michael. A statue of the Virgin Mary had been erected in the same place about 100 years earlier and is still venerated as an image of grace in the monastery Mary's Chapel. Pilgrimages began and over the centuries the chapel was expanded and improved. In 1630 the Archbishop of Mainz and Elector Anselm Kasimir from the Wambold Kapuziner summoned Engelberg and built a monastery for them. By order of King Ludwig I, Franciscans took over the monastery and the pilgrimage pastoral care in 1828. In 1899 the church was given its present form. Today five brothers still live and work there.
