The Sharif Basha Cemetery, also Sherif Pasha, Arabic:مدفن شريف باشاIs a cemetery on the Nilostufer in the north of New Beni Suef in the governorate Beni Suef. The special thing about this cemetery is that in its north the remains of a small step pyramid from the Old Kingdom can be viewed.

background

Map of Sharīf Bāshā cemetery

Because of the narrow strip of fruit land, most of the cemeteries are on the east bank of the Nile in the desert. The fruiting land is far too valuable to build cemeteries here. To the north are mainly the city's cemeteries Beni Suef.

Sharīf Bāshā cemetery belongs to the village 1 29 ° 6 ′ 15 ″ N.31 ° 7 '58 "E, which is located on the west bank and has been inhabited since the 18th century. So you had to cross over to the cemetery by boat or take the twelve-kilometer detour via Beni Suef for a long time. With the new Beni-Suef-Bridge the journey is of course shortened considerably.

While various small step pyramids are known all over Egypt - most of them are on the west bank - this pyramid in the north of the cemetery has remained almost hidden from most scientists and those interested in Egypt to this day. This is perhaps also due to the rather poor state of preservation. The size of the base area corresponds roughly to the pyramid of Zāwiyat el-Maiyitīn/ Zāwiyat Sulṭān and besides this is the only pyramid on the Nileast side.

getting there

The easiest way to get to the cemetery is via trunk road 21 on the east bank of the Nile, which is at one 1 Roundabout in New Beni Suef(29 ° 2 ′ 39 ″ N.31 ° 6 ′ 32 ″ E) begins. You can 2 new Beni Suef Bridge(29 ° 5 '38 "N.31 ° 8 ′ 20 ″ E) to get from one bank to the other more quickly without having to take the detour via Beni Suef. For a long time there was even a signpost on trunk road 21, but it disappeared at the beginning of 2019.

mobility

Both cemeteries have to be explored on foot, of course. A slope leads almost to the cemetery.

Tourist Attractions

  • 2  Sharīf Bāshā cemetery. In the cemetery there are numerous individual and flat graves of families from the village of Sharīf Bāshā. Some graves have their own enclosing walls. The only 1 Dome grave of the cemetery belongs to the family of Sharīf Bāshā himself.(29 ° 5 ′ 40 ″ N.31 ° 8 ′ 48 ″ E)
  • 3  Step pyramid of Sharīf Bāshā. About 100 meters north of the cemetery there is a square step pyramid with an edge length of about 22 meters - that's about 50 ancient Egyptian cubits - of which only the lowest layers of limestone at a height of about 30 centimeters have been preserved. The pyramid would have reached a height of about 15-17 meters. The pyramid axis deviates from the north-south direction by a few degrees. Like all other small pyramids, the pyramid is a dummy pyramid. i.e., it has no grave rooms. Their function and the builder are unknown. Usually these pyramids are a symbol of power and come from around the end of the ancient Egyptian 3rd dynasty. Only recently has this pyramid been used again as the burial place of the Sharīf Bāshā's family.(29 ° 5 '48 "N.31 ° 8 ′ 50 ″ E)
