Future City is a near-ghost town and suburb of Cairo, Illinois. Largely ruined by flooding, it's a great nostalgia trip for anyone interested in how Southern Illinois got to be the way it is today.

Understand

On the Ohio River Scenic Byway, Future City is a sad testament to what can go wrong when poor government, racial tension, and systemic poverty come together. The town has only a few residents today, and perhaps that is for the best; the town has little hope of recovery unless something drastic happens to change the situation.

Get in

Future City serves as the entrance to Cairo, Illinois. Just head north from Cairo.

Get around

See

Future City sits at the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. There are also several abandoned buildings, slowly rotting away with time. Probably worth exploring.

Do

Urban exploration is the main reason people pass through here.

Buy

Apart from a Dollar General just north of the city limits, there's nothing to buy.

Eat

Drink

Sleep

Just north of Future City is a Quality Inn. It's the perfect place to stay overnight between Urbex trips to Cairo, Urbandale, and Future City.

Cope

One of the few remaining buildings in town is the Shiloh Baptist Church.
