George Town (Cayman Islands) is a city on the Cayman Islands.
background
The capital of the archipelago is arguably one of the smallest capitals on earth and very easy to explore. The "Downtown" area includes the triangle Harbor Drive, Mary Street and Shedden Road. In between, Fort Street and Cardinal Avenue branch off at a right angle to the harbor. Albert Panton Street and Edward Street run parallel to the harbor.
Next to the Anchorage Center is the Elmslie Memorial Church. The parking lot behind the church was originally the cemetery. Crosses and tombstones indicate this.
There is a beacon across the street. At the same time, the seafarers who lost their lives at sea are remembered there. 153 names are currently chiseled there.
The attractions of George Town can be visited in a day. Worth seeing is the clock tower for King George V, the House of Representatives - the Legislative Assembly, the courthouse - Courts Building, and the post office - the General Post Office. The Cayman Maritime and Treasure Museum is located on the waterfront. Treasures from wrecks of the 16./17. Century can be visited.
The city is best known as a cruise ship destination and duty-free shopping destination. Visitors will find over 130 restaurants with a wide variety of tastes from different cultures, including American fast food chains.
After the hurricane of 2004, an incredible rebuilding began. Anyone who enters the port by cruise ship has the feeling of coming to Disney Land. Everything is packed with brightly colored buildings, two floors, small turrets, large sunshades on the verandas: one restaurant next to the other.

Tourist Attractions
- 1 Elmslie Memorial Church. There was a church there as early as 1835. The current structure was built between 1920 and 1922 by the boat builder Captain Rayal Bodden. The church chair was made from mahogany by the boat builder Elroy Arch. The church name goes back to the first Presbyterian missionary who worked on the island between 1846 and 1863. The church was recently renovated. It is open Mon - Fri from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Services are held at 9:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. on Sunday.
- 2 Fort George. Built around 1790, by the sea, across from Fort Street. There are only a few remains of the wall from this fortification. Originally it was oval in shape with walls 1.5 m high and 1.6 m thick. Around 1802 there were 80 soldiers on the island to crew the fortifications. Unfortunately, most of the complex was destroyed by a builder in 1972. It was not until 1987 that the remains were placed under protection by the National Trust.
- Main post office. Built in 1939 by Captain Bodden. The post office has a special counter for stamp collectors. In addition to selected beautiful postage stamps, you can also get first day cancellations there. This building also houses some customs offices, the treasury and the Government Savings Bank.
- 3 Heroes' Square. Parliament Building, Legislative Assembly Building, built in the 1970s on the site of the former Princess Royal Park. Opposite the building is the Hero Square of the National Heroes with a statue of James Manoah Bodden.
- Historical clock tower, Fort Street intersection Edward Street. Built in 1937 for £ 140. He stands there in memory of King George V.
