Facts about Gislaved

History

Some of the municipality's towns can be dated back to the 15th century. This applies to Gislaved, Burseryd and Skeppshult. Anderstorp is probably 100-200 years older. In the history books, Gislaved is first mentioned in 1434, then with the spelling Gislawith. Legend has it that the name Gislaved originally originated from a man who settled in the area as early as the 12th century. His name was Gisle, and the area eventually came to be known as Gisle's Forest. Skog stayed with the year Ved, Gisle stayed with the year Gisla. And for many years now, the place has been called Gislaved.

Broaryd arose when the railway was built in 1903. Hestra previously had a center at northern Hestra's old wooden church, but when the railway was built, the village was moved. Smålandsstenar also has ancient origins. Smålandsstenar is located in Villstadsbygden, which, considering that the judges' rings are three thousand years old, is probably just as old.

The former name of Reftele is Ölmestad. Since many ancient remains have been found in the area, it is known that buildings have existed here for about 10,000 years. The courthouse, where justice was formerly served, is 700 years old.
