Gladbeck is a city in Ruhr area in North Rhine-Westphalia. In addition to a short stroll through the city center, a visit to the Wittringen leisure center in the south of the center is a good option.

background

Gladbeck is a city that grew up through mining (1873-1971). There is little reminiscent of this in the cityscape, apart from a monument on the Europa Bridge and other isolated monuments and buildings. It is a typical city in the Ruhr area, with a few cultural offers and the leisure center Wittringen.

Gladbeck-Mitte has several shopping streets and some of the city's monuments, such as the town hall from 1910 or the facilities around Jovyplatz.

getting there

By train

For travelers, the Gladbeck West train station is most likely to come into question, which is at the end of the Europabrücke across from the Heisenberg-Gymnasium. It is located on the edge of the actual city center within walking distance. It is located on a railway line that connects Haltern and Essen.

By bus

In the street

The A2 runs right through the city and has two exits here, Gladbeck Ellinghorst for the west or south-west of the city, and Gladbeck / Essen, which is closer to the center, but is also more prone to congestion.

Tourist Attractions

  • Holy Cross Church in Gladbeck-Butendorf, in neo-Romanesque style
Wittringen Castle seen from the other bank of the castle pond
  • Wittringen Castle, with an associated leisure center with forest. The castle corresponds to the typical Westphalian moated castles. Today's buildings date almost exclusively from the 1920s, when the castle was rebuilt and the adjacent forest was set up as a leisure facility. In the Wittringer Forest there is, among other things, a larger memorial to commemorate the dead of the world wars and the tyranny.
  • Museum of the City of Gladbeck The museum in Wittringen Castle clearly tells the story of the origin of coal through the medieval world to modern times with coal mining and structural change.

activities

shop

The most important shopping street is still the Hochstraße, one end of which leads to the town hall forecourt (Willy-Brandt-Platz). With the departure of a large department store, Gladbeck has lost its value as a shopping city, especially for the people of Gladbeck, many go to Essen or the Oberhausen Centro for big shopping.
