Gonder - a city in northern Ethiopia, the former capital of the Ethiopian Empire, and the capital of the historic province of Begemder. The fourth largest city in the country.
The city was founded in 1580 by the emperor Sertse Dyngyl (1563-1597). It became the imperial capital during the reign of Emperor Fasiledes (1632-1677).
It is not clear who the castle builders were, but nevertheless Portuguese, Indian and Arab influences are evident in them. In 1941, during World War II, the British, who waged a war with Italy in Ethiopia, dropped bombs on some buildings, but the entire complex survived basically without major damage.
There is a theological seminary in Gonder, educating priests of the Ethiopian Church.
