Gouyave is a city in Grenada.

background

This fishing village is the second largest settlement on the island. The French named it after the many guava trees that grew in the region. When the island came into British possession, the French wanted to be deleted and the place was given its name Charlotte Town. However, the population did not agree and the government had to withdraw its plan. In the 18th century there were two coastal batteries, one in the north at what is now the Nutmeg factory and the other at the police station. The place was so important to the French that in October 1795 they established a small military port there. Gouyave is the administrative center for the St. John District. A small part of the fish (mainly barracudas, king fish and tuna) is sold in the local market, the greater part is processed in the local factory, frozen and shipped to the USA.
