Grand-Bourg (creole: Gwanbou) is a municipality on the island Marie-Galante in Guadeloupe.
background
The place was founded in 1648 by the first French colonists who grew sugar cane. In 1676 the Dutch tried to take the place, in 1690 the English were there. In the 19th century, several natural disasters broke out over the place. In 1838 a fire destroyed most of the houses, in 1843 there was an earthquake, in 1865 a cholera epidemic had to be fought and a hurricane had to be survived. The decline of the sugar industry led to a disastrous collapse of the economy in 1884. In 1928 the place was completely rebuilt after a hurricane.

- Anse of the bass, near the airport, below Chateau Murat. Wonderful, fine sandy beach, the water here is clear and calm due to offshore reefs. But there is no infrastructure.

The sugar mill itself is about halfway between Saint Louis and Grand-Bourg and was built in 1860; today it is owned by Rameau Héritiers. Since 1934 there has been a single-cylinder steam engine to drive the mill. In 1940 rum began to be distilled, today production is 200 liters per hour. About 200,000 liters are distilled each season. The Chateau Murat was the center of a 200 hectare plantation with 300 slaves in the 19th century. According to reports, the property was managed by the family of a brother-in-law of Napoléon. The sugar mill dates from 1814.
