Ville de Grand-Case is a city in Saint Martin.

background

The first written evidence of Grand-Case goes back to 1817, when there were seven or eight houses between the salt lagoon and the sea, but they could not yet be called villages. The owner of the Hope Estate, halfway between Grand-Case and Orient Bay, Carter Ray, planted cotton on his plantation. His mansion was called Mont Vernon. He shipped the cotton to the island of ANGUILLA via the port of Grand-Case. Salt was exported and timber imported through the same port. For a few years there was even a small shipyard. In 1971 the small L’Espérance airfield was built in the partially drained salt lagoon.

Today this former fishing village on a narrow isthmus between the sea and the salt lake has become a tourist stronghold. On the main street, Boulevard L. Bertin Maurice or Boulevard Grand-Case, there are shops, bars and restaurants that are in no way inferior to those in continental France - and accordingly not in terms of prices. This ranges from the West Indian lolos - grill stalls - to top restaurants with French and international cuisine. Some of the restaurants are also open for lunch, but it's liveliest in the evenings. The numbering of the houses starts at the junction to the airfield and rises towards Marigot. The even house numbers are on the sea side, and the odd house numbers are on the side facing the former salt lagoon.

The citizens have worked hard and successfully to ensure that the buildings and streets of the settlement are not abandoned in favor of tourism or that high-rise hotels are built. It still looks very original here. The cruise lines are deliberately not used. Grand-Case is also a good example of a cliché-free coexistence between “black and white”. While admittedly many other places on the island can clearly be assigned skin colors, everything is mixed up here - and it works very well. “C'est la vie” is what they say here, and this simple saying characterizes Grand-Case perfectly.

During the main season there is a street festival every Tuesday evening with stalls, music, art - and of course food.

In the center of Grand-Case, behind the police station, there is a large, paid car park. The parking fee is 5 euros or 7 USD. Refunds are available at many local restaurants.

At the southern entrance to the village, the Route de Contournement turns off, which leads past the airport to the south. The pharmacy and post office are located on this street. Shortly before the salt lake, a narrow street leads back to the boulevard.

beaches

  • Baie de Grand-Case. Fine, white sand beach with a growing number of hotels, good restaurants, water sports and hawkers. Many locals come there for picnics on weekends. The water is calm, there are no changing rooms, nudism is possible.
  • Friar's Bay. 5 km by road from Grand-Case, remote, small, reef-protected bay with a restaurant. There are some good spots for diving. The Guichard salt lake has a connection to the sea there. The hinterland was afforested.
  • Happy Bay. A completely natural beach that can only be reached on foot from Friar's Bay.
  • Petite plague. Second beach at Grand-Case, further away from the village, in the north, therefore with fewer hotels, but very good for swimming.

The center of Marigot is 7 km south. Orient Bay beach is 4 km east of Grand-Case on the other side of the island.

The airfield was partially built into the salt lagoon. The driveway at the north end of the village is only 750 m from the sea.
