Geography
Southern Greenland is the southernmost part of the island of Greenland. It includes in particular Cape Farvel, the southernmost point of the whole island. In addition to its composition as a fjord, this region is characterized by fertile land as well as sheep farming, activities impossible from a certain latitude due to permanently frozen ground.This region also has the very rare wooded areas of the island, notably the Arboretum Groenlandicum, an arboretum near Narsarsuaq.
Weather
The locals have given this region the amusing name of Sineriak Bananeqarfik (kl) (Banana Coast). Far from a tropical paradise, it still benefits from the mildest temperatures in Greenland as well as a humid climate, contrasting with the cold, desert and extremely dry north of the country.
Story
Like the rest of the country, this region has known the different waves of population coming from the Canadian Arctic, its favorable climate making it one of the most suitable lands in Greenland for colonization.
It is also here that the Vikings landed for the first time on the island. In 985, Erik the Red, banished for murder ofIceland, decided with 450 men to build a colony on these lands, then barely known. This is how this land was baptized Greenland, "the green country". The Viking colony called eastern settlement was the largest Viking settlement in Greenland, it is believed that at its peak 4000 people lived there.e century probably due to the Little Ice Age which made agriculture more and more difficult
