Alphabet

pronunciation guide

The pronunciation of Turkish words is almost entirely phonetic - all letters are pronounced except for the Ğ which lengthens the sound of the preceding vowel. The sounds also correspond, in general to Portuguese, with some exceptions.

Vowels

ı - similar to The in Portuguese (and not i)
ö - as in German, a sound between O and and
ü - like the u French, pronounced with pursed lips

Consonants

c - sound of DJ (like the j in jump in English)
ç - sound of bye (as in Czech)
h - always pronounced, has the sound of rr
r - like the r of word shine
s - always like s and never eat z
ş - as tea (key, bug etc)
y - always pronounced (as in the word iyi, "Good")
