Bengali is the only official language of Bangladesh and one of the 22 official languages ofIndia. It is the first language of a majority of the Bangladeshi population but also of the population of the Indian state of West Bengal which includes Kolkata (Calcutta), the third largest city in India. It is the sixth most spoken language in the world.
It is written using a specific alphasyllabary different from that of the Hindi although there are some similarities.
Pronunciation
The vowels have two written forms. There is one form when the vowel begins the syllable and another when it is associated, and therefore written attached, to a consonant. When two consonants meet, they can form ligatures. In some cases the consonants are not entirely recognizable. Some vowels and consonants have the same pronunciation.
