Bases | |
Swedish is spoken in Sweden and in parts of Finland where it is the second official language, together with Finnish (Swedish is however the only official language of the Finnish archipelago of Åland). From one region to another we will find different dialect variations, more on pronunciation and certain expressions. For example, the southern dialect (skånska) is similar to Danish in pronunciation and may be incomprehensible to someone who has learned "classic" Swedish, from Stockholm (Rikssvenska)
Generally speaking, Rikssvenska is spoken on television, and most Swedes from other regions can speak a variant of their dialect which is similar to Stockholm Swedish.
Swedish is a language Indo-European which belongs to the Germanic group and the Eastern Nordic subgroup. It is very similar to other Scandinavian languages spoken by its Norwegian and Danish neighbors. Swedish makes it easy to understand spoken and written Norwegian and written Danish. On the other hand, oral comprehension of Danish is very limited for people not used to the Danish accent.
