the Vietnamese is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world with nearly 90 million native speakers. It is the official language in Vietnam and it is also spoken in places where Vietnamese have immigrated such as the United States, France and Australia. Vietnamese grammar is very simple: nouns and adjectives have no gender and verbs are not conjugated. Vietnamese, on the other hand, is a tonal language; the meaning of a word depends on the pitch of the voice. Vietnamese is not of the same family as Chinese although it contains many borrowings from the Chinese because of the centuries of Chinese domination in Vietnam. In addition, a few centuries ago even Chinese characters were used, forming a system called "chữ Nôm Which lasted until Vietnam was colonized by the French.
