How to write the time

In the United States, the 12-hour clock is used; which means that the time is given with the initials AM signifying the first 12 hours and PM signifying the second. Noon is 12PM while midnight is 12AM. The 24-hour clock is only used in military contexts. The UK uses the 24-hour clock for writing, but to say it is usually added "in the morning" or "in the afternoon" with the 12-hour clock.

How to write the dates

In the United States, the date is given in the form month-day-year when written and spoken. Also, the day is said as the ordinal word. For example, if today is October 20, 2008, it would say "today is October twentieth, two thousand eight. "The ordinal is optional when the date is written. In the UK, the date is given in the form day-month-year.

In the United States it is common to say the years in groups of two numbers instead of normal numbers. That comes from "counting in hundreds" which is also common for amounts of money or other uses. The year 1984 would be either "Nineteen eighty-four" or (in a slightly more formal and somewhat old-fashioned language) "Nineteen hundred eighty-four". The only exception to that seems to be the decade between 2000 and 2009 when "two thousand ..." was said. The year 2016 for example is often said "twenty sixteen" instead of "two thousand sixteen", especially in informal language.
