Gyenesdiás is a resort in the county Zala in Transdanubia.

background

Gyenesdiás is located 100 km from the western border of Hungary and 15 km from the Hévíz-Balaton airport in the West-Balaton region at the foot of the Keszthely Mountains. The number of permanent residents is around 4,000. The scattered settlement character is still typical of the settlement structure today. The village of Falud, which was founded in the time of the conquest and destroyed in the Turkish era, was located on the site of the present-day settlement. A carved memorial column near the former church commemorates it. Today's Gyenesdiás came about in 1840 through the merger of the villages of Falud, Gyenes and Diás. In 1653, among the first settlements in Europe, the Diás Vineyard Laws, a set of rules regulating wine-growing, were published here, and were in force until 1949. The large community began to take on the character of a holiday village between 1905 and 1907. On the initiative of the two bathing associations, bathing beaches were built that still retain their charm and character in their original form. The holiday guests are expected with comfortably furnished private rooms, apartments, family pensions and hotels as well as campsites. There is no lack of swimming pools or various wellness services. A wide range of supporting programs guarantees a pleasant holiday stay. Gyenesdiás is the holiday resort of the West Balaton region!

Tourist Attractions

There are several places worth seeing in Gyenesdiás.

Gyeneser St. Ilona (Helene) ChurchThe inhabitants of the Gyeneser vineyard, which at that time still belonged to Keszthely, decided in 1807 to build a chapel in honor of God. At that time the remaining ruins of the Faludy St. Elisabeth church were dismantled. But the then landlord of the municipality, Count György Festetics, did not approve of the construction, so the citizens of the municipality sold the stones and saved the price for interest. After the count's death, they turned to his son László Festetics, who not only allowed the construction of the chapel, but also supported him with building materials and also gave him land. All the ecclesiastical objects and the church's equipment were made by the Count's wife and her daughter Countess Ilona (Helene). The classical church was completed in a year and a half, and in 1826 it was consecrated in honor of St. Helene, also in memory of Count László's daughter, Ilona. Its semicircular choir is the same width as the ship. A tympanum and a small tower can be seen above its two-pillar gate. The cross was attached to the tower the year after the consecration. It is the only St. Helen's Church in the country.

Darnay (Dornyai) cellar (cellar with beam framework) with wine tasting facilityThe 17th century cellar is a typical original folk architecture cellar. The year 1644 can be read on its main beam. Until wood justice (bringing the wood from the forest) was possible, three cellars were built from beams carved from thick oaks. In 1800, however, the construction of cellars was prohibited due to this forest-damaging construction method, instead other options were recommended (nuthatch loam, wattle). Unfortunately, hardly any of these cellars have survived.

Shepherd's houseIt was built in the middle of the 19th century as the official residence of the village ox herder. There is currently a small historical Avar exhibition in the building.

Diáser Church of Our LadyThe chapel, which was consecrated to Our Lady, was built in 1894 on the site of a previous chapel, according to plans by the Budapest architect Ákos Radits. Most of the costs were paid by Mihály Dornyai's heir. Count Tasziló Festetics gave some of the building materials, while the costs of the equipment were paid for by the inhabitants of Diás. The Italian Polikrom altar in Renessaince style is the work of the Tyrolean sculptor József Runggaldier.

Virgin Mary statue - Patrona HungariaeThe Patrona Hungariae statue, which was consecrated in 1990, stands on the hill above the main road 71 in a specially protected nature reserve. The work of Sándor Boldogfai Farkas is also a memory of the last Queen of Hungary, the wife of Charles IV, Zita.

Heroes CrossJános Vitéz (Hans Helden) and his wife Anna Ságvári placed the hero's cross in 1807. It is noteworthy that the year of origin is secretly on the cross, the number 1807 results from the addition of the Roman numerals in the Latin text. There are 16 more crosses in the area of the municipality.

Nepomuki St. Hans spring and statueThe St. Hans spring was renewed in the year 2000: entrepreneurs and the spring water nature association had the Nepomuki St. Hans statue from 1828, which stood above the spring, restored, and many of them planted parks in an enlarged area The memorial trees on the trees preserve the memory of the aquatic engineer Sándor Léczfalvi - he once planned the system of linking the sources in a network, the historian Béla Darnay Dornyai, and the pastor poet János Talabér.

Wine pressThe almost 120-year-old decorated wine press was made by the great-grandfather of Tamás Molnár, a citizen of Nemeshetés. Since then it has been in a cellar, now it can be found on the border of the three settlements of the mountain community. The wine press symbolizes the past of the mountain community, which was characteristic of the villages on the Zala shores of Lake Balaton 50 years ago.
