The city on the banks of the Vanajavesi Hämeenlinna (swed. Tavastehus) was the capital of the former until August 1997 southern finnish Häme Province. It was built under the protection of a 13th century castle that is well preserved to this day and which has since served as a prison. In 1862 the first Finnish railway ended here from Helsinki. Hämeenlinna is the birthplace of the composer Jean Sibelius.

Malice Castle
- Brick castle. A castle from the 13th century with some of the old parts still preserved. It was used as a prison in the 20th century and was rebuilt accordingly. Among other things, you can see the tower, which offers a good view of the surroundings, and the meter-sized bread ovens. A few meters from the castle is a military museum. Guns etc. can be seen outside. Inside there is an exhibition about the development of uniforms, weapons, etc., which also has some special exhibits such as snowshoes made of straw. You can also watch a film about the fighting against Russia during World War II.
