Harbor Island is an island in front Eleuthera.

background

Harbor Island, 5 km long and barely more than 400 m wide, from the locals Briland called, was settled by the English in 1694. The distance to Eleuthera is about 3 km, and is covered in 10 minutes by water taxi. The main town and at the same time the only town on the island Dunmore Town, named after the former Governor of the Bahamas (1786-1797), the Earl of Dunmore. At the end of the 18th century, the place was an important port and sugar producer with 2,500 inhabitants. In the 19th century it was the second largest city in the Bahamas. The largest ships in the Bahamas were built here between 1792 and 1922 and some of them were also exported. By 1943 the population sank again to 743. From Titus Hole, from which one has a view over the harbor, it is said that it was the island's first prison.

The Harbor Island Beach is a 5 km long, pink, fine sand beach where there are all kinds of water sports. There are some interesting diving spots around the island. The cruise ship "Cienfuego" sank off the island. The massive wreck of the "Potatoe & Onion" from the 19th century can be found in a depth of 5 m.

Dunmore Town

Dunmore Town, the first capital of the Bahamas, was founded in 1791 by Lord Dunmore. The place was once an important port and sugar producer. You can still find beautiful colonial-style buildings there today. The almost five kilometer long pink sandy beach is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike.
