background
The archipelago consists of the largest island by far, Heard, and the much smaller McDonald Islands. The islands are of volcanic origin and are the only active volcanoes in Australia.
Due to their proximity to the Antarctic, the islands are largely snow-covered and glaciated. There is no permanent human presence on the islands, only occasional scientific expeditions. The islands have belonged to the as a whole since 1997 UNESCO World Natural Heritage.
Tourists are very rare in these latitudes, but they are not impossible. There have been five guided tours to these very remote islands in 20 years (1998-2017); a regular offer did not result from this.
getting there
A journey to this archipelago, including the twelve-mile zone, generally requires the prior permission by the Australian Antarctic Division. It must be applied for four months in advance. As a rule, you will only be able to visit the largest island, Heard, the smaller islands are almost inaccessible to outsiders.
You have to take care of the subsequent journey yourself, there is no ship or flight connection. Realistically, you will join a scientific expedition and take it from Australia to the islands. Traveling with your own yacht is theoretically possible, but rather utopian. If you decide to travel this way, you should be aware of the icebergs in these waters.
mobility
Sturdy shoes wouldn't be wrong in the snow.
language
English. If you meet penguins on the island, they don't speak English, not even a little.
activities
If you are traveling on a scientific expedition, you can of course help with scientific research.
If you are on the islands privately, you should bring a few skis and ski on the 2745 meter high Mawson Peak volcano - provided that this is covered by the permit. Skiing on Heard has the unbeatable advantage that you have the entire mountain to yourself and not be disturbed by other skiers. The only disadvantage is that you have to forego such luxuries as ski lifts or even après-ski.
kitchen
Self-sufficiency. Hunting or fishing on the islands is expressly prohibited.
accommodation
A tent that is as warm as possible, or alternatively sleep on the boat. Rumor has it that there are dilapidated tin huts from past expeditions on the island; Of course, you shouldn't rely on it.
security
The risk of a volcanic eruption on Heard should not be underestimated. Even if the snow-capped volcano looks peaceful, it is still active and erupts approximately every four years. The last outbreak occurred in 2016.
Climate and travel time
Arctic cold with temperatures below freezing, plus very stormy. The best travel time is certainly the southern summer (December-February).
