Himalayas - the highest mountain range on Earth.
The Himalayan chain lies in South Asia, has over 2.5 thousand. km long and about 250 km wide. It extends over land belonging to Pakistan, India, China (Tibet), Nepal and Bhutan. In the Himalayas, there are as many as 10 out of 14 eight-thousanders in the world. Peaks exceeding 8,000 m a.s.l. form the Great Himalayas, in which the lowest mountain passes are usually above 4,000 m above sea level. The highest peak is Mount Everest with a height of 8,848 m above sea level. To the east, this range is bordered by the Brahmaputra Valley, and to the west by the Indus. The peaks of the Little Himalayas reach an average of 2,400 m above sea level, only in the west 4,000 m above sea level. The lowest Siwalik range stretches along the entire system from Brahmaputra to Indus, and its height does not exceed 2000 m above sea level.
The name "Himalayas" comes from Sanskrit (हिमालय, Himālaya) and means "seat of the snows" (from himá, "winter, snow", and ālaya, "seat, lying").
