Hiuma - belonging to Estonia island, located in the Baltic Sea south of the entrance to the Gulf of Finland, opening the Gulf of Riga, separated from Sarema by the Soela väin strait and from the mainland by the Muhu Väin strait. Area 989 km2; population 11,000, 96% are Estonians. Administratively, the island is divided into the city of Kärdla, 2 municipalities with the capital city of Kõrgessaare and Käina, and two rural municipalities of Emmaste and Pühalepa. There are about 180 settlements on Hium.
