background

On May 14, 1625, John Powell landed in this bay with his ship Olive Blossom and went ashore with the crew. He took possession of the island for the British King James I. The place was originally called St. James Town. Almost 21 months later, the ship William and John landed under the renewed leadership of John Powell with 80 settlers and 10 slaves. A monument in the city center reminds of the historical importance of the place. James Fort and Folkstone Fort were built to protect the city. Only a few remains of the wall of both are preserved today. A police station is now housed in St. James Fort. Some of the old cannons are still standing in front of the gate. In the two narrow streets leading to the sea "1st Street" and "2nd Street“There are some first class restaurants. Holetown the third largest city on the island. The entire road traffic to the north coast has to torment through the place. So it is not surprising that bars, shops and restaurants are lined up here.

There is a large shopping center in the Sunset Crest district, which also has souvenir shops and banks. At the north end of town is Chattel House Village, a dozen replica houses full of souvenirs and gifts. Just a few meters away is St. James's Parish Church, the oldest church on the island.

Most of the beach at Holetown has been washed away in recent years and is now very narrow. The government has allocated $ 3 million to restore the beach. In the course of 2009, 2,500 m² of sand are to be washed up. A new walkway is being built along the coast.

getting there

In the street

Holetown is easily reached from Bridgetown via the coastal road. From the deep water port, you first drive north on the Spring Garden Highway. After 5 km it turns into Highway 1. After another 7 km you have reached Holetown. Coming from the airport you have immediate access to the A B C Highway, which curves past Bridgetown. After about 23 km you will reach the junction for Holetown just before Rock Hall. From there it is 3 km to the town center.

After a two-year dispute about the whereabouts of the Haverist, it was blown up on November 22, 1978 about 400 m from the coast by the American Navy with 200 pounds of dynamite and set on the ground. It is 111 m long and stands upright in 42 m water depth. One of the masts reaches 6 m below the surface of the water. It is part of the Folkstone Underwater Park.
