Hopewell - Sandy Bay is a city in Jamaica.

background

If you leave Montego Bay in a westerly direction, you will reach the municipal boundary after around 15 km, which is formed by the flat but wide Great River. This meanders about 35 km inland and can carry huge amounts of water and sand with it in the rainy season. In the 1970s, the bridge over the river was washed away after heavy rain and there was only one makeshift bridge for the next 20 years. Today you can see a clearly yellow-brown discoloration of the sea water after heavy rainfall when it mixes with the river water. On the other side of the river, after a few hundred meters, a flat plain begins. There used to be a huge coconut plantation there; today, mixed farming is practiced. The hill on the other side of the plain is Round Hill, with Hopewell behind it. After a further 7 km drive along the coast you will reach Tryall and around the next bend in Sandy Bay.

This is a small fishing village halfway between Montego Bay and Lucea. By September 2007, Jockey International had around 600 employees sewing underwear there. The Tryall plantation, which covers around 100 hectares, is in the immediate vicinity. Nothing is known about the origin, it is believed that the owners lived in England and the plantation was run by employees. In the late 19th century it was acquired by Eugene Browne, an American-Irish family, and in 1834 made the governor and vice admiral for Jamaica. The water wheel comes from the time of sugar cane cultivation. Much of the sugar plantation was destroyed during the Christmas Rebellion of 1831-1832. After the end of slavery and the decline of sugar cane cultivation, coconut palms were planted from 1918. In the heyday of this industry, one million coconuts were harvested per year from 1933 onwards. At the end of the 1930s, when the coconut industry was coming to an end, a guest house was opened there. With the outbreak of World War II one had to close. It did not reopen until 1949. In 1957, a group of Texans bought the property, formed a community of owners, built villas and spent their holidays there. The golf course was created in 1975. Today there are around 60 villa owners, mostly North Americans. The manor house where the restaurant is located was built in 1834. The international Jhonnie Walker World Championships have been held on the golf course for years.

Tourist Attractions

  • Tryall Water Wheel. One of the largest water wheels in the Caribbean is located just off the main road, about 300 m behind the Flint River, on the grounds of the golf club. After an arson during the slave riots in 1832, the sugar mill was rebuilt. The water wheel was installed in 1834 and restored in 1957. The water comes from the Flint River over 3 kilometers via a canal and aqueducts. 200 years ago it was used to power the mills that press the sugar juice out of the sugar cane. Next to it are the foundations and the chimney of the old sugar factory.Price: Free admission, daily.
