Easter Island - Ilha de Páscoa

Moai, the statues of Easter Island.

THE Easter Island (in Spanish: Easter Island, in Polynesian: rapa nui) is one of the most isolated islands on the planet. It is officially part of the Chile and is located in the South Pacific Ocean, on the way to the Tahiti. Its fame comes from the enigmatic giant statues, called moai, carved centuries ago.

Understand

The first inhabitants of the island were the Polynesians, who occupied it from, it is estimated, 900 AD. How these people perished is still a mystery. Rapa Nui is listed by UNESCO as World Heritage Site.

The island's name commemorates the date of its discovery by an exploration ship Dutch, which was an Easter Sunday in 1722.

As the island is very small, there are only two ways to get around: by taxi or on foot. If you take the second option, it has more advantages, as it can penetrate places where it is not possible to take a taxi. You can also travel by bicycle or on horseback. There are local agencies that rent both, as well as motorcycles, cars and other vehicles.

The entire island, especially visit the volcanoes and the factory where the natives made their statues. Since the island is very small and if you are adept at walking, then go for it. Prepare some sandwiches and take a bathing suit on the other side of the island. Along the way you can see the spaces where the natives used to live...Take sunscreen, as the wind is very deceiving and the sun is strong there. Admire the platforms with the moai, called ahu, but don't step on them, and don't leave the marked trails in places like Orongo and Rano Raraku.

Virtually everyone will speak at least the basics of one of these three languages. The Rapa Nui language is spoken by all native speakers.
