The park covers 140 km2 in total. In 1998, the park was expanded to include the two remote islands Ko Bon and Ko Tachai, but since "Sembilan" is Malay to "nine" it doesn't seem to stay in people's minds and those aren't visited as often as the original nine. .

Landscape

The nine granite islands are perfect images of paradise, covered in tropical jungle and equipped with white sand beaches. As if that wasn't enough, the views under the water's surface are even more impressive and many people believe that this is the best dive site in Thailand. "Skin-Diver" magazine named the Similans as one of the ten most beautiful places.

Flora and fauna

There is a huge diversity of fish species. Underwater visibility is the best you will find in Thailand. You'll see lots of colorful fish, like lionfish and clownfish (Nemo), and if you're lucky, you can find bigger fish like a manta or even a whale shark. The corals in the area were largely victims of coral bleaching in 2010 and have not yet recovered, but the fish is still there so it's worth doing snorkelling or scuba diving.

High season at Similans is from December to April, when there are no strong winds. The best time to visit is March, when the winds are calm and the water clear. The national park is closed to visitors during the rainy season, from 16th May to 31st October each year. In addition, Ko Tachai will be closed to tourism for an indefinite period starting October 15, 2016 to allow the island to recover from the destruction caused by an excessive number of visitors.

Virtually all dive shops on Andaman's North Coast offer diving and/or snorkelling tours and liveaboards for the Similans. Cruises typically last four days and four nights. But shorter trips are available, often with operators who have larger boats parked on the islands and who make transfers from the mainland using speedboats.

admission fee

National park admission fee for foreigners is 500 baht per day (children 300 baht). For Thai citizens the fee is 50 baht, children 20 baht. The diving fee is an additional 200 baht per day, regardless of passport. Most boats do not include this in their quoted price.
