- 1 Ilsenburg Monastery. Former Benedictine abbey in the town of Ilsenburg in the Harz district in Saxony-Anhalt. The monastery complex dates from the 11th and 12th centuries. The heyday of the monastery was between the late 11th and 13th centuries. A larger church was dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul on June 5, 1087. The partially preserved buildings of the enclosure were erected between 1120 and 1176 after fire destroyed the previous buildings. The town of Ilsenburg has owned the monastery church since 1974 and had the sacred building extensively restored. The remains of the cloister building have been owned by the Ilsenburg Monastery Foundation since 2000.

- From Ilsenburg you start on the Heinrich-Heine-Weg to the Chunks, a hiking trail through the Ilsetal, named after the poet Heinrich Heine who hiked down from the Brocken here in 1824.
