The Isla Taboga is an island in Panama. The island is just off the Pacific coast, close by Panama City, therefore, it is a popular weekend destination for the local population. The island is about 11 km² in size. However, only a small part of the island is inhabited, as the rest is a restricted military area. About 1000 people live on Taboga.
getting there
The only way to get there is by boat. Of Panama City There are 2 lines between the island and the capital; the crossing takes about an hour. The Calypso Queen departs from Causeway in Panama City and Expreso Del Pacifico from Muelle 19 at Balboa Harbor. Both depart and return from Panama City in the morning. There is a second crossing in the late afternoon (also in both directions). You have to inquire about the exact times in the city as they are constantly changing. A ticket costs $ 8 on both lines (there and back).
mobility
Either you go on foot or you ride a bike, although most will probably use the first option. There are hardly any cars, and the streets are too narrow for cars. The restaurants and accommodations are all within easy walking distance.
Tourist Attractions
- Taboga Church. The only church on the island was built as early as 1550 and is the second oldest church in the western hemisphere.
- Playa La Restinga. The beach is right in front of the Hotel Taboga. If you are not a hotel guest you have to pay $ 7 entry to the beach, but you can use the sanitary facilities. The beach is very popular with Panamanians and very busy on weekends.
- Playa Honda. This beach is located next to the jetty for the boats and can be used free of charge. This beach is at least as beautiful as Playa La Restinga, if you can do without sanitary facilities, you should look for a quiet place here.
- Isla El Morro. Isla EL Morro is very small and only connected to Isla Taboga by a strip of sand. El Morro can only be reached via Playa La Restinga.
activities
- Sunbathing and swimming: This is probably the main activity that one can do on Taboga. The island is ideal for relaxing for a few hours or, if you stay longer, a few days.
- hike: You will not be able to undertake great hikes on Taboga. However, there is a path that leads to the former American military base. From there you have a beautiful view. If you want to go this way, you just keep walking along the main road, which then becomes the "hiking trail". The climb takes a little over an hour.
shop
There is a small shop on Taboga where you can buy the most important groceries. This is near the church, on the main street. Directly at the jetty there is a stand selling postcards and some souvenirs.
