Islamabad is the capital of Pakistan. The city is located in the northeast of the country in Punjab, but is not part of this province but forms it Capital territory under federal administration.
Districts
Islamabad is laid out in grids. Most neighborhoods, called sectors, have some sort of search index for their names. The letter rises from north to south, the number from east to west. The northernmost district is currently D12, with sectors I8 to I16 on the southern city limits. Sector H19 was recently created at the airport. New sectors usually fit into the grid and are named accordingly.
background
The city was only founded as a capital in the 1960s and is still almost a city of millions. When Ayub Khan became President of Pakistan in 1958, it was very important to him to build a new capital. She should be northwest of Rawalpindi come to rest, which was until the completion of Islamabad, from 1958 the capital of Pakistan. Three man-made lakes (Rawal, Simli and Khanpur) were created at the foot of the foothills of the Himalayas. This made the local climate more balanced than it was before, as the climate was one of the main reasons for the location of the city. The city was built according to the plans of Konstantinos A. Doxiadis. The streets were laid out like a chessboard and initially divided into four sectors. These are separated from one another by green spaces and parks and are structured in such a way that they function independently. Islamabad only officially became the country's capital in the 1980s. Initially, the city developed only slowly. Rapid population growth began in the 1990s, which is why new sectors had to be built.
